UM Women Begin Competition At NCAA Track Championships

Fayetteville, AR (hurricanesports.com) – The 2003 BIG EAST Champion University of Miami women’s track and field team has qualified five individuals and one relay for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 14-15, in Fayetteville, AR.

The Hurricanes will be led by sophomore All-American Lauryn Williams (Rochester, PA) who qualified in both the 60-meters and 200-meters. Williams, the two-time defending BIG EAST 60-meter champion, is undefeated in the 60-meters this season and ranks fifth in the nation in 60-meters (7.25) and tenth in the nation in the 200-meters (23.53).

Miami will also look to freshman sensation Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern). Greggs, competing in her first season of indoor track, qualified in the 400-meters and will also anchor the 4×400-meter relay.

Greggs, the 2003 BIG EAST Indoor Champion in the 200-meters, ranks seventh in the nation in the 400-meters. Miami’s 4×400-meter relay of freshman Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, PA), senior Jamillah Wade (Philadelphia, PA), junior Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern) and Greggs enters the NCAA Championships ranked third in the nation (3:33.32).

Also qualifying in the 400-meters is senior All-American Saraque Whittaker (Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas). Whittaker enters the NCAA Championships ranked 16th in the nation (53.44).

Senior Sharianne Lawson (Palm Beach Lakes) will compete in the 60-meter hurdles while All-American Gina Harris (Philadelphia, PA) will compete in the long jump.
