Lightning Ends Sunday's Football Practice Early

Aug. 11, 2002

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Head Coach Larry Coker and his staff ended Sunday’s only practice approximately 45 minutes early because of lightning as the Miami Hurricanes completed their second day of fall camp at Greentree Practice Field.

“We never want to put anyone – ourselves or our fans – in any danger and we felt like the lightning was getting a little too close for comfort,” Coker said. “Overall, it was a productive day. Our receivers continue to play well and I was pleased with the way our quarterbacks got the ball to them on some deep routes during our scrimmage sessions. We’ve got some people banged up, but the guys who had heat-related issues yesterday returned in good shape.”

Three defensive backs who suffered cramps and dehydration toward the end of Saturday’s afternoon practice (cornerback Al Marshall, cornerback Antrel Rolle and cornerback Mo Sikes) returned in good shape on Sunday. Notable players who missed the practice were fullback Kyle Cobia (left knee injury) and tailback Jarrett Payton (back spasms). Also, defensive end Jerome McDougle was limited with a strained pectoral muscle.

Cobia injured his knee early in Saturday’s afternoon practice and underwent an MRI Sunday. The results of the MRI should be available on Monday afternoon.

Miami has two practices slated for Monday, the morning session at 8:30 a.m. and the afternoon workout scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Practices are open to the public through Friday, August 16. All workouts are closed to the public beginning Saturday, August 17, with regular media policies (viewing for only the first 30 minutes and final 15 minutes of practice) going into effect at that time.

The Hurricanes begin the 2002 season Saturday, August 31, versus Florida A&M at the Orange Bowl. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
