James Jones Selected To Verizon Academic All-District Team

Coral Gables, FL (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami junior forward James Jones (Miami American) has been selected to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District II Men’s Basketball team. Jones is now eligible for the national Verizon Academic All-America Team, which will be announced on March 7.

Joining Jones as All-District selections are Matt Bonner (Florida), Tim Lyle (James Madison), Mike Dunleavy (Duke) and Jobey Thomas (Charlotte).

Jones has started all 26 games at power forward this season for the 21-5 Hurricanes and is averaging 12.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game. He currently ranks third on the team in scoring while leading the team in rebounding and blocked shots. His 69 blocks this season ranks as the third highest single-season total in school-history. He currently ranks third in the BIG EAST and 19th in the nation in blocks.

Jones (6-8, 218) is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and carries a 3.371 cumulative GPA in finance. He was named a 2001 Arthur Ashe Scholar Athlete and was runner-up for the 2001-02 BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athlete Award.

Jones has recorded 18 double-figure scoring games and a team-high four double-doubles. He has led the team in scoring four times and in rebounding 12 times. Earlier this season against Florida International, Jones recorded eight blocked shots, which tied the UM single-game record.
