No. 13 Men's Basketball Falls Short At Rutgers, 64-61

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) – Jerome Coleman scored a career-high 30 points andRutgers held off No. 13 Miami 64-61 Sunday when Darius Rice missed a potentialgame-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Rutgers (17-8, 7-5 Big East) beat a ranked team for the fourth time thisseason, setting a school record. The Scarlet Knights earlier defeatedGeorgetown, Connecticut and Syracuse when they were in the AP poll.

Miami (21-5, 8-5) trailed 61-52 with 54.5 seconds left before cutting it to64-61 on Rice’s basket with 9.6 seconds left.

Rutgers then threw the ball out of bounds at the opposite end of the court.The Hurricanes got the ball back to Rice, who dribbled to the top of the keyand missed an off-balance shot over Mike Sherrod and Rashod Kent.

With Rutgers leading 42-39 with 13:41 remaining, Miami went cold and shotjust 2-for-14 over the next 13:04. Rutgers built a 61-52 lead as Coleman hitthree 3-pointers in a 19-13 run.

Coleman shot 8-for-16 from 3-point range. Ricky Shields added 17 points andfive assists and Kent had nine points and 16 rebounds.

Kent left immediately after the game because his mother, Brenda, who came upfrom West Virginia to watch the game, was taken to nearby St. Peter’s MedicalCenter late in the game. Her condition was not immediately available.

Rice had 21 points for Miami. John Salmons added 14 points, six rebounds,seven assists and nine turnovers.

Rutgers won its third straight game and sixth in the last seven despiteshooting 34.4 percent and committing 20 turnovers.

Miami, which has come back from second-half deficits eight times thisseason, shot 41.3 percent, was outrebounded 41-33 and had 21 turnovers.

Rutgers held Miami without a basket for the first six minutes to take a 12-3lead. But the Hurricanes fought back and took a 22-21 lead.

The Knights went into halftime with a 31-28 lead after Coleman hit a long3-pointer as time ran out.

The Scarlet Knights are 14-1 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center, their besthome start since 1981-82.
