MIAMI (AP) – James Jones led five Miami players in double figures with 22points in the Hurricanes’ 91-57 win over Savannah State on Saturday.
Jones scored Miami’s first six points of the second half as the Hurricanes(3-0) outscored the Tigers (0-3) 17-3 in the first four minutes to take a 57-28lead.
Savannah State’s Jamal Daniels scored eight of his team-leading 13 points inthe half, but Jones, Darius Rice and Robert Hite each hit 3-pointers to keepMiami up by 29 with 9:43 remaining. Rice scored 14 while Hite added 13.
The Hurricanes stayed on the perimeter, converting 10 of a season-high 233-point attempts.
With six minutes remaining, Paulo Coelho hit a 3-pointer and a jumper togive the Hurricanes a 32-point lead.
Coelho and Eric Wilkins scored 10 each off the bench. The Hurricanes had aschool-record 21 steals and forced 30 turnovers, 15 coming in the first half.
Miami scored the game’s first 11 points and jumped out to a 16-4 lead sevenminutes in. But both teams struggled from the floor, with Miami shooting justunder 36 percent in the first half.
The Tigers came back three minutes later with an 8-0 run, cutting theHurricanes’ lead to 20-16. But Jones scored six points as part of a 20-9 Miamirun to end the half.
