Miami Doubles First-Place Votes in AP Poll

Defending national champion Miami doubled its total of first-place votes in the latest Associated Press college football poll released Sunday.
The Hurricanes (2-0) extended their winning streak to 24 games with a 41-16 rout of Florida on Saturday in the first regular-season meeting between the in-state rivals since 1987.
The impressive victory increased Miami’s total of first-place votes from 34 to 68 and point total from 1,758 to 1,844 in a nationwide panel of 74 writers and broadcasters.
Two weeks ago, Miami and Oklahoma (2-0) each had 27 first-place votes. The Sooners posted a 37-27 win over Alabama on Saturday, but lost 18 first-place votes, receiving three and 1,700 points, in the wake of Miami’s latest performance.
Idle Texas (1-0) lost seven first-place votes, leaving the Longhorns with three and 1,667 points.
Tennessee (2-0) and idle Florida State (2-0) remain in the fourth and fifth spots.
Florida (1-1) slipped from sixth to 12th in the poll while Ohio State (2-0) moved up into the Gators’ former spot.
Michigan (2-0), Nebraska (3-0), Georgia (1-0) and Washington State (2-0) round out the top 10.
Virginia Tech (2-0) is 11th followed by Florida, Oregon (2-0), Washington (1-1), Michigan State (2-0), Marshall (1-0), Southern California (1-0), Colorado (1-1), North Carolina State (3-0) and Notre Dame (2-0), which moved up three spots to No. 20.
Texas A&M (2-0), Wisconsin (3-0), UCLA (1-0), Colorado State (2-1) and Louisiana State (1-1) complete the top-25.
South Carolina (1-1) was the only team to drop out of the poll after losing to Virginia, 34-21.
The AP poll is part of the Bowl Championship Series formula that determines the participants in the national championship game. The top two teams in the ratings meet in the game, which this season is the Fiesta Bowl on January 3.
