Two UM Relays Qualify For Finals At Penn Relays

Philadelphia, PA (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami women’s 4×100-meter relay and 4×400-meter relay both qualified for the Championship of America finals at the Penn Relays Carnival in Philadelphia, PA.
Miami’s 8th-ranked 4×100-meter relay of senior Wyllesheia Myrick (Miami Northwestern), freshman Lauryn Williams (Rochester, NY), junior Sharianne Lawson (Palm Beach Lakes) and freshman Wiande Moore (Spring, TX) took second in their heat with a time of 45.77 to advance to the final. Texas, ranked second in the nation, won the heat with a time of 45.41.
Friday’s 12:35 p.m. final consists of seven of the top-15 relays in the nation. Joining Miami and Texas are No. 1 ranked LSU, No. 3 South Carolina, No. 6 Indiana, No. 7 Cal State Northridge and No. 15 Houston. Rounding out the field will be Florida.
The Hurricanes’ 5th-ranked 4×400-meter relay of junior Saraque Whittaker (Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas), sophomore Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern), junior Jamillah Wade (Philadelphia, PA) and senior Jenise Winston (League City, TX) also finished second in their heat to move on to Saturday’s final at 6:05 p.m.
Miami face six other ranked teams in the finals including No. 1 ranked South Carolina, No. 2 Texas, No. 4 Seton Hall, No. 7 Texas Tech, No. 14 Florida and No. 22 Cal State Northridge. The eight-team field will be rounded out by Tennessee.
Wade also competed in the 400-meter hurdles on Thursday finishing 11th with a time of 59.81. Other individuals competing included junior Gina Harris (Philadelphia, PA) and senior Kareen Clarke (Lithonic, GA) in the long jump championship. Harris finished fifth with a jump of 5.79 meters (19-00.00) while Clarke took ninth with a leap of 5.33 meters (17-06.00).
