Miami and Nebraska met for the 10th time in the Rose Bowl on Thursday night.In nine meetings since 1951, the Huskers lead 5-4. Five of the games were inbowls, most with a national title on the line:

Gotham Bowl (Dec. 15, 1962): Nebraska upsets Miami and George Mira, 36-34,at Yankee Stadium, a game played in freezing weather before a crowd of 6,166.Mira, who threw for 321 yards, threw a last-minute interception that sealed theHuskers’ win.
Orange Bowl (Jan. 2, 1984): Nebraska, led by Heisman winner Mike Rozier,is 12-0 and ranked No. 1 under coach Tom Osborne heading into the game. Miami,quarterbacked by Bernie Kosar, is 10-1 and ranked No. 5 under coach HowardSchnellenberger. Rather than play for a tie and certain national title, theHuskers go for the win. Turner Gill’s 2-point conversion pass attempt is battedaway by Ken Calhoun with 48 seconds left, and the Hurricanes win 31-30 fortheir first national crown.
Orange Bowl (Jan. 2, 1989): In a dazzling defensive effort, Miami holdsNebraska to 80 yards rushing in a 23-3 win. Steve Walsh throws two TD passesand the Huskers avoid their first shutout since 1973 on Gregg Barrios’ 50-yardfield goal in the third quarter. Miami finishes 11-1 but Notre Dame wins the’88 national title with a Fiesta Bowl win over West Virginia.
Orange Bowl (Jan. 1, 1992): Once again, Miami’s quick defense proves toomuch for the Huskers in a 22-0 win that gives the Hurricanes their fourth APnational title. This time, the Canes hold the Huskers to 82 yards rushing inhanding them their first shutout in 221 games. Heisman winner Gino Torretta hasa TD pass and Carlos Huerta kicks three field goals.
Orange Bowl (Jan. 1, 1995): No. 1 Nebraska finally breaks through againstNo. 2 Miami with a 24-17 win to give Osborne his first national title. Nebraskafights back from a 17-7 deficit against the hometown Hurricanes as fullbackCorey Schlesinger scores two fourth-quarter TDs. The Huskers finally get theiroffense going, and produce 305 total yards – 199 on the ground. Nebraska sacksquarterback Frank Costa four times, once for a safety.
