Dec. 23, 2001
Coral Gables, FL – University of Miami senior guard John Salmons has been named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week after leading the Hurricanes to a pair of victories. Salmons shares the award with St. John’s guard Marcus Matten.
Salmons averaged 10.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 10.0 assists, 3.5 steals and 3.0 blocks per game in leading UM to wins over Florida A&M and Charlotte. He shot 6-10 (.600) from the field, including 2-5 (.400) from three-point range, and 7-8 (.875) from the line.
Salmons recorded a career-high 10 assists to go with seven rebounds, six points, four blocks and four steals in Miami’s 90-62 win over Florida A&M on December 18, and came within one rebound of recording the first triple-double in school-history with 15 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists in the Hurricanes’ 64-56 win over Charlotte on December 22.
The 6-7 native of Philadelphia did make history during the win over Charlotte becoming the 24th player in UM history to surpass 1,000 career points. He is the only player in school history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists and 150 steals during a career.
The honor is the second of Salmons’ career. He was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on March 4 of last season.
