Hurricanes Upset No. 21 Indiana, 58-53

MIAMI (AP) – James Jones had 13 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks Saturdayto help the unbeaten Miami Hurricanes down No. 21 Indiana 58-53 in the OrangeBowl Classic.
The Hurricanes (9-0) matched their best start in school history, alsoachieved in 1962 and 1997. The win came in their first game this season againsta ranked team.
Indiana (6-3) shot a season-low 33 percent, including 1-for-15 from 3-pointrange. The Hoosiers were 12-for-25 at the free-throw line, including TomCoverdale’s first miss in 28 attempts this season.
Miami was just as bad from the field – 33 percent, including 0-for-13 from3-point range. The Hurricanes won the game at the line, going 20-of-31,including 4-of-6 over the final 25 seconds.
Jared Jeffries, Indiana’s top scorer this season, was held to seven points,10 below his average. Coverdale scored 16 points and sophomore George Leach hada career-high 10.
Elton Tyler and John Salmons each scored 12 points for the Hurricanes, whowon despite shooting under 40 percent for the fifth time.
Miami improved to 3-12 against the Big Ten by winning its first meetingagainst Indiana.
With the score 31-all, the Hurricanes ran off seven consecutive points earlyin the second half for their biggest lead. Darius Rice dunked on an alley-oopfrom Salmons with 14 minutes left to make it 36-31. Salmons was then fouledintentionally on a breakaway by Jeff Newton and made both free throws for a38-31 lead.
Jeffries made two of four free throws to cut the margin to 50-48 with 3:38to go. Coverdale’s free throw made it 52-49, but he missed a second attempt -his first miss this season.
With 30 seconds left, Coverdale missed a 3-point try that would have tiedthe game at 54. Barnes then made three free throws and Jones added one toclinch the win.
