Freddie Capshaw One of 10 Finalists For Ray Guy Award

Oct. 26, 2001

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Greater Augusta Sports Council has announced the top ten finalists for the second annual Ray Guy Award recognizing the nation’s top collegiate punter. Each of the 31 punters on the watch list were evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to their team with emphasis placed on the following categories: net average, number punted inside the 20, percentage of total punts inside the 20, average return yardage and percent not returned.

Miami junior Freddie Capshaw (Rock Springs, Wyoming) is one of 10 players named as finalists for the honor. Capshaw, who has been named BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week four times in his Miami career, has averaged 44.5 yards per attempt this season on 19 punts. Nine of Capshaw’s punts have been downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and four have sailed into the opposing end zone for a touchback. Seven of Capshaw’s punts have been 50 yards or more in length including kicks of 51 (twice), 54, 56 and 58 yards. The junior has been at his best against big-name opponents, averaging a season-best 48.2 yards against Florida State on October 13.

The winner of the award will be named on the ESPN College Football Awards Show, which will air Thursday, December 6, 2001. The winner will then be honored at the Greater Augusta Sports Awards Gala. Also honored during the evening will be the 11th Annual G.A.M.E.S. Medal (Greater Augusta Medals for Excellence in Sports) winners.
