Rice Named Preseason First Team ALL-BIG EAST

New York, N.Y. – (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami forward Darius Ricewas named 2001-02 Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team by a vote of the league’shead coaches at the BIG EAST Media Day in New York.
Senior forward John Salmons was named to the Second Team.
Rice’s selection marks the third time in the past four seasons that Miami hashad a BIG EAST Preseason First Team member. Johnny Hemsley made the list in 1998and John Salmons was selected in 1999.
Troy Bell, the Boston College guard who was the BIG EAST Co-Player of the Yearlast season, was named 2001-02 Preseason Player of the Year and West Virginia’sJonathan Hargett, a 6-0 freshman guard, was tabbed Preseason Rookie of the Year.
Four of the five Preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team selections earned all-conferencerecognition last season. Senior forwards John Salmons of Miami and Ryan Humphreyof Notre Dame were All-BIG EAST Second Team picks. Sophomore forward Mike Sweetneyof Georgetown and senior guard Darius Lane of Seton Hall were accorded All-BIGEAST Honorable Mention. Sweetney also made the All-Rookie Team. Villanova’s GaryBuchanan, a junior guard, set an NCAA record by making 73 straight free throws.
