Hurricanes Still Ranked No. 1 By AP
Oct. 21, 2001
NEW YORK (TICKER) – Mostly known as “basketball” schools, Stanford, Illinois and North Carolina are making a big splash on the college football landscape.
The Cardinal, Fighting Illini and Tar Heels are the newcomers in the latest Associated Press football poll, released Sunday afternoon.
Stanford (4-1) is ranked 20th after shocking previously No. 5 Oregon, 49-42, on Saturday, ending the Ducks’ 23-game winning streak at Autzen Stadium. The Cardinal basketball team is coming off a season in which it fell just one win short of the Final Four.
The same can be said of the Illinois hoops squad. However, the Fighting Illini (6-1) are now No. 22 in the nation in football after a 42-35 victory over Wisconsin, their third straight victory.
North Carolina is a basketball power, and one of its hoops stars last season was Julius Peppers, who doubles as an All-American defensive end for the 5-3 and 23rd-ranked football team, which pounded Clemson, 38-3, on Saturday.
However, the top of the rankings have a familiar look. Miami (5-0) remained No. 1 after receiving 47 first-place votes and a total of 1,771 points from a nationwide panel of writers and broadcasters.
Defending national champion Oklahoma (7-0) garned 22 first-place votes and is 30 points behind the Hurricanes. Third-ranked Nebraska (8-0) had two first-place votes, and the final one went to No. 4 UCLA (6-0).
Rounding out the top 10 is fifth-ranked Virginia Tech (6-0), Florida (5-1), Texas (6-1), Michigan (5-1), Tennessee (4-1) and Maryland (7-0).
Oregon (6-1) is 11th, followed by South Carolina (6-1), Washington (5-1), Washington State (7-0), Georgia (5-1), Brigham Young (7-0), Auburn (6-1), Fresno State (6-1) and Florida State (4-2).
No. 21 Georgia Tech (5-2), 24th-ranked Purdue (4-1) and Colorado (5-2) complete the poll.
Clemson, Northwestern and Toledo dropped from this week’s rankings.
