GAME RECAP:FIRST QUARTER – Troy State missed a 48-yard field goal on their opening drive… Ken Dorsey’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Andre Johnson capped off a quick three-play scoring drive following the missed field goal…Troy State running back LeBarron Black caught a 2-yard touchdown pass. SECOND QUARTER – Todd Sievers missed a 54-yard field goal…Santonio Thomas sacked Brock Nutter for a nine-yard loss…Troy State missed a 45-yard field goal… Todd Sievers converted 34-yard field goal capping off a 10-play 3:02 drive with 4:25 left in the half. Jonathan Vilma caused a fumble that was recovered by Troy State…Jamaal Green caused a fumble and sacked Nutter who recovered the fumble…Dorsey’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Beard, first TD catch of Beard’s career, capped off a 7-play, 49-yard 1:11 scoring drive with: 45 left in the half…The Dorsey to Beard connection tied Dorsey for 5th on the UM career touchdown passes list with Ryan Clement (1994-97)…Halftime Score: UM 17 Troy State 7
THIRD QUARTER – Ed Reed intercepted a pass on the opening drive of the half and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown, 4th of his career moving him into sole possession of third place on the interception list… Markese Fitzgerald sacked Nutter ending a drive…Dorsey’s pass to Clinton Portis put him in 8th place ahead of George Mira Sr. on the all-time passing list…Jarrett Payton rushed for a 2-yard score, 2nd rushing touchdown of the season, 3rd of his career, capping a 6-play, 56-yard scoring 1:11 with 9:13 left in the quarter…Ethenic Sands’ 37-yard reception was the longest of his career setting up a Willis McGahee 7-yard rushing touchdown, 2nd of his red shirt freshman season, capping off a 4-play, 43-yard 1:25 scoring drive…Todd Sievers extra point moved him into sole possession of 7th place on the all-time points scored by a kicker with 134…Score: UM 38 Troy State 7
FOURTH QUARTER – James Scott’s sack on Bearden for an 8-yard loss was the first of his career…Kyle Cobia’s 8-yard reception is the longest of his career…FINAL SCORE: UM 38 Troy State 7
OF NOTE…This game marked the first meeting of the Hurricanes and the Trojans. This is Troy State’s first year at the Division I-A level… Former Hurricane Standout and current New York Jets receiver Santana Moss was in the stands watching his former teammates take on the Trojans.
Scoring First Wins Games – When Miami scores first it is nearly a lock to win. Beginning with the 1983 season, the Hurricanes have now gone 146-14 when scoring first.
Miami When Scoring 30+ Points – Miami has now won 86 consecutive games when scoring 30 or more points, since dropping a 31-30 decision at Notre Dame in 1988.
Miami outscored Troy State 31-0 in the second and third quarter. This is the 7th consecutive regular season game that the Hurricanes have not allowed a score in the third quarter.
INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS:
KEN DORSEYDorsey’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Andre Johnson in the first quarter extended his school-record streak to 20 straight games…Dorsey’s 322nd completion in the first quarter moved him pass Frank Costa on the all-time pass completion list to 9th place… Dorsey has over 200 yards passing for the 9th straight game dating back to the Virginia Tech game of the 2000 season, the school record is 12 games held by Steve Walsh and Vinny Testaverde…Dorsey moves into 8th place on the all-time career passing list jumping George Mira Sr. (1961-63) with 4,710 yards…First game this season in which Dorsey hasn’t been intercepted.
ED REED…Continued his campaign for the Jim Thorpe and Bronko Nagurski Awards with an interception returned for a touchdown in the third quarter, fourth of his career moving him into second place on the all time list interception return yards with 213 career return yards only behind Bennie Blades (1984-87) with 305 yards on 19 interceptions.
KEVIN BEARD – His second quarter touchdown reception was the first of his career.
JEREMY SHOCKEY – His two catches in the first quarter ties him with Syii Tucker’s 10th place mark with 36.
TODD SIEVERS – His extra points in the third quarter moved him into 7th place with 134 points on the all-time UM points scored by a kicker passing Jeff Davis (1980-83) with 133 points.
NEXT UP: FLORIDA STATE – Miami and Florida State face for the 45th time since the 1951 season with the Hurricanes holding a 24-20 advantage in the series. Last season, Miami ended FSU’s five-game win streak over Miami with a thrilling 27-24 victory at the Orange Bowl. Miami is 10-6 all-time on the road at Doak Campbell Stadium, including a 31-21 loss in 1999. Miami’s last victory at FSU was 17-16 in 1991 – the Seminoles’ last home loss overall.
INJURIES:- Defensive End Cornelius Green did not dress because of a hamstring injury- Linebacker Howard Clark left the game with a left ankle sprain and did not return.- Fullback Najeh Davenport left the game with cramps and did not return.
