The Miami Hurricanes held a spirited two-hour practice in full pads on Friday afternoon at the Greentree Practice Fields on the UM campus.
Miami head coach Larry Coker was pleased with the intensity displayed by his team in the late August heat. “The guys were into it,” said Coker. “I think we got a lot accomplished today. This was a full-padded day. They didn’t particularly want to go in full pads but it’s not time to pull back yet. We have more than a week before we play and we’ll keep them fresh and do that when it’s time to do that.”
Coker also addressed his team’s mental preparation for the opener at 106,537-seat Beaver Stadium. “Joe Paterno knows how to get his team ready to play. We know what we’re in for,” said Coker. “We’re zero and zero. We haven’t won a game, we haven’t made a first down, we haven’t stopped anybody. We’re only projections right now. We’ll have to start proving ourselves next Saturday.”
Miami has a mock scrimmage slated for Saturday afternoon before a walk-through on Sunday. The weekend work is closed to media and the public. The team will resume regular practices on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 3:30 p.m. at Greentree.
Miami begins the 2001 season on Saturday, September 1, at Penn State in a nationally televised contest (ABC Sports). Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
