Coral Gables, FL – University of Miami head women’s track coach Amy Deem has been named the United States Track Coaches Association South Region Coach of the Year.
“This is a tremendous honor,” said Deem, who wins the award for the first time. “The award is very special to me because it is voted on by other coaches.”
This season Deem was honored as the BIG EAST Coach of the Year after leading Miami to its third BIG EAST Conference Championship in the last four seasons. The BIG EAST Coach of the Year honor was the fourth in six seasons for Deem. In addition, Deem was recognized in 1998 as the USA Track & Field Florida Coach of the Year.
Earlier this season Deem extended her streak of consecutive seasons with at least one All-American to 10 as Kareen Clarke (triple jump), Natalie Watson (800-meters) and Patricia Pearson (800-meters) earned All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, AR.
Since taking over the women’s track program in 1990, Deem has guiding 12 different athletes to a combined total of 34 All-America honors and five individual NCAA championships including 1999 NCAA 100-meter hurdle National Champion Yolanda McCray and five-time national champion in the hurdles Gillian Russell.
