UM Women Head To Penn Relays

April 25, 2001

Coral Gables, FL (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami women’s track and field team will compete this weekend, April 26-28, at the 107th Penn Relays Carnival at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, PA.

The Hurricanes begin competition on Thursday and enter the meet with several athletes ranked among the nation’s best in their respective events.

Highlighting Thursday’s competition will be sophomore Jamillah Wade (Philadelphia, PA) in the 400-hurdles and freshman Jennifer Penrose (Mesa, AZ) in the shot put.

Wade, who attended Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia, has already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the 400-hurdles and currently ranks 15th in the nation in the event.

Penrose is coming off a school-record performance in the shot put at the Miami Gatorade Track and Field Classic on April 14. Penrose won the event with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 15.17 meters (49-09.25) becoming the first woman in UM track history to post an NCAA qualifying mark in a throwing event.

Also competing on the Thursday will be Dore Madere (Dallas, TX) in the discus and the women’s 4×400-meter relay.

Madere has recorded three wins this season and is currently ranked No. 1 in the BIG EAST in the event. Madere shattered the school discus record with a throw of 48.14 meters (157-11.00) at the Florida Relays on March 30.

The women’s 4×400-meter relay of junior Jenise Winston (League City, TX), Wade, sophomore Saraque Whittaker (Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas) and freshman Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern) is ranked 11th in the nation and will try to improve on its NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 3:36.35 set at the Florida Relays.

Action will heat up on Friday with the women’s triple jump championship. The event will be highlighted by the UM duo of junior Kareen Clarke (Lithonic, GA) and senior Antonnikka Owens (Orlando, FL).

Clarke, a two-time All-American and school-record holder in the event, ranks fourth in the nation while Owens is currently the eighth ranked triple jumper in the country. Both have already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.
