CORAL GABLES, Fla.–Defender Lisa Gomez was named MVP of the 2000 Miami soccer team after starting all 20 games and leading the team with 10 assists on the season.
The Hurricanes wrapped up the season with a 9-10-1 overall record, 2-3 in the BIG EAST, and reached the post-season for the second consecutive season.
Vonda Matthews was named Freshman of the Year after making an immediate impact on the team, starting all 20 games this season. She also proved to be a very versatile player, playing defender for the first half of the season and forward for the second half of the season.
She finished out the season with 10 points, including four goals and two assists.
Freshman Nicole Safran was named Offensive MVP. She tallied 13 points on the season, including 2 goals scored and nine assists, three of which were game winning assists.
Junior Deidre Bass was named Defensive MVP. She started all 20 games picking up 12 points with five goals scored and two assists.
Freshman Allison Ford was named the Most Improved Player. After not starting the first four games of the season, Ford stepped up her defensive play and started the remainder of the season. She became a threat on the field and totaled five points, including two goals and one assist.
The Hurricanes will open the 2001 season traveling to the Florida State Tournament Aug. 31-Sept. 2.
