UM Women Dominate Miami Gatorade Classic

Coral Gables, FL – The University of Miami women’s track and field team won seven events, established three school-records and recorded five NCAA provisional qualifying marks at the 15th Annual Miami Gatorade Track and Field Classic at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables, FL.

All-Americans Natalie Watson (Coral Springs) and Kareen Clarke (Lithonic, GA) led the Hurricane onslaught posting wins in the 800-meters and triple jump respectively.

Watson, a senior competing in her final home meet, won the 800-meters with a school-record time of 2:05.69. Her winning time not only bettered her own school-record of 2:06.11 but also ranks as the fastest time in the nation this year.

Watson later joined junior Jenise Winston (League City, TX), freshman Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern) and sophomore Terria Madison (Columbus, GA) in winning the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3:39.24. The Hurricane relay, ranked seventh in the nation, easily defeated second-place Alabama (3:48.24) by over nine seconds.

Clarke, a junior, also set a school-record in winning the triple jump with a leap of 13.33 meters (43-08.75). The jump bettered her-own school-record of 13.24 meters and ranks third in the nation this year.

The day also belonged to freshman Jennifer Penrose (Mesa, AR) who won the shot put with a school-record throw of 15.17 meters (49-9.25). The throw shattered the old mark of 14.60 meters (47-11) by nearly two feet and provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She is the first thrower in UM history to record an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Also provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships were sophomore Jamillah Wade (Philadelphia, PA) and senior Antonnikka Owens (Orlando, FL). Wade recorded the nation’s ninth fastest time (58.66) in finishing second in the 400-hurdles while Owens, the nation’s fifth-ranked triple jumper, took fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.96 meters (42-06.25).

Other Hurricanes recording victories on Saturday included sophomore Saraque Whittaker (Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas) in the 400-meters (54.06), senior Shannon Sarabyn (Centreville, VA) in the 3,000-meters (10:48.65) and Dore Madere (Dallas, TX) in the discus (47.96 meters/157-04).
