Miami's Men's and Women's Track Team Complete Final Day of BIG EAST Indoor Championships

Syracuse, NY (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami’s women’s track team finishes in 3rd place and the men’s track teams finishes in 8th place at the 2001 BIG EAST Indoor Track Championships completed today in Syracuse, NY.
The women completed the competition with two first-place finishes, four second-place finishes and one third-place finish. The men tallied three second-place finishes.
Sophomore Patricia Pearson (Jacksonville, FL) and Natalie Watson (Clarendon, Jamaica) finished first and second in the 800-meter BIG EAST Championship with times of 2:06.65 and 2:06.73 respectively. The University of Pittsburgh’s Janine Jones placed third (2:09.24).
Junior Kareen Clarke (Lithonic, GA) captured the BIG EAST Championship in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 12.84 m (42’01.50). West Virginia’s Christine Brown (12.61m, 41’04.50) places second and Connecticut’s Nicole Toney places (12.52m, 41’04.50) third. Miami Senior Antonnikka Owens (Orlando, FL) placed fourth, sophomore Gina Harris (Philadelphia, PA) placed sixth and junior Raquel Scott (Dallas, TX) placed in seventh.
Watson (1:12.56) and sophomore Saraque Whittaker (1:12.60, Ft. Lauderdale, FL) placed second and third in the 500-meter dash. Georgetown’s Sasha Spencer wins the BIG EAST championship with a time of 1:10.55.
Harris placed second for the BIG EAST Championship in the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.07m (19’11.00). Seton Hall’s Nolle Graham finished first with a jump of 6.39m (20’11.75) and Notre Dame’s Tameisha King finished in third with a jump of 6.07m (19’11.00). Clarke (5.87m, 19’03.25) finished in fourth place with Owens (5.71m, 18’09.00) placing fifth.
The Hurricane women’s 4×400-meter team (Jenise Winston, Jamillah Wade, Watson and Whittaker) placed second for the BIG EAST Championship with a time of 3:41.97. Georgetown wins the BIG EAST Championship with a time of 3:39.89 and Pittsburgh placed third (3:42.38).
Sophomore Phillip Buchanon (Lehigh, FL) placed second in the 60-meter BIG EAST Championship with a time of 6.80. Connecticut’s Laban Marsh wins the title with a time of 6.78 and West Virginia’s Antonio Brown placed third with a time of 6.87. Freshman Willis McGahee (Miami, FL – Central) placed fifth with a time of 6.96.
Junior Gus Martin (Miami, FL – Northwestern) finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.06. Villanova’s Antoine Johnson wins the BIG EAST title with a time of 7.92 and Seton Hall’s Jeff Young finished in third with a time of 8.07.
Freshman Vince Wolfork (Lantana, FL) placed second for the BIG EAST Championship in the shot put with a throw of 17.05m (55’11.25). Pittsburgh’s Patrick Harding wins the BIG EAST title with a throw of 17.73m (58’02.00) and Connecticut’s Corey Pusey places in third with a throw of 16.87m (55’04.25).
The University of Miami men’s and women’s track team will competes next at the Nike Fast Times in Gainesville, FL on March 1, 2001.
