MIAMI (AP) – Omar Cook had 21 points, 12 assists and hit two key 3-pointersin the second overtime period as St. John’s outlasted Miami 85-79 on Saturday.

Playing with five stitches in his upper lip, Cook hit back-to-back3-pointers in the second overtime to vault the Red Storm (13-9, 7-4 Big East)from three points down to three points ahead.

It was the Red Storm’s second overtime victory this season against Miami(12-10, 4-7). At Madison Square Garden last month, St. John’s beat theHurricanes 67-63.

The second meeting was much more physical.

Cook, who leads the nation in assists, missed more than seven minutes in thesecond half after taking an inadvertent elbow to the mouth from Miami’s DariusRice.

The teams combined for 62 fouls, six players fouled out and Miami was hitwith two technical fouls. Even a Hurricanes cheerleader had to leave the courtafter getting hit in the face with the ball.

St. John’s converted 30-of-43 from the free throw line. Miami was 29-for-41from the line.

Rice led Miami with 21 points despite fouling out with 48 seconds left inregulation.

St. John’s led 32-28 when Cook went to the locker room. When the freshmanguard returned, Miami was ahead 43-39.

Cook’s 10-foot jumper with 30.6 seconds left in regulation tied the game at63 and forced overtime. Cook had a chance to win it in the final seconds of thefirst overtime, but his driving shot was off the mark.

Reggie Jessie scored 14 points for St. John’s, including five in the secondovertime. Willie Shaw had 17 points before fouling out late in the second halfand Kyle Cuffe added 16.

John Salmons scored 16 for Miami and James Jones added 14.
