Reggie Wayne Jumps To No. 1 In All-Time Receptions

Sept. 25, 2000

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Senior wide receiver Reggie Wayne became the University of Miami’s all-time receptions leader this past weekend after his stellar performance in the Hurricanes’ 47-10 victory over BIG EAST-rival West Virginia at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, WV.

Wayne, who entered the contest in third place with 139 catches, caught seven passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns to rewrite the record with 146 career receptions and pass former UM All-Americans Michael Irvin (No. 2, 143) and Lamar Thomas (No. 1, 144) along the way.

“When you think of the [receivers] past, Michael Irvin, Lamar Thomas, it’s outstanding,” Wayne said to media following the game. “I tried not to think about it, but as the game went on and we started moving the ball and being productive, I asked how many catches I had and started counting down.”

For his effort, Wayne was also honored by the BIG EAST Conference as Offensive Player of the Week, his first career weekly honor from the conference. He accounted for 43.6 percent of the Hurricane receiving yards against the Mountaineers. He also had Miami’s two receiving touchdowns, scoring on catches of 38 and 47 yards. His first TD gave Miami a 14-7 lead.

Wayne has caught a pass in 27 consecutive games, a streak that ranks eighth nationally among active pass-catching streaks.
