Hurricanes Football Practice Report - Saturday, August 12

Aug. 12, 2000

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Avoiding significant rain delays, the University of Miami Hurricanes continued two-a-day preseason football practices Saturday with a pair of two-hour sessions on the Greentree Practice Field. A thunderstorm interrupted the afternoon practice for approximately 20 minutes before the team resumed work, but the team found the cloudy weather to be a welcome respite from the stifling heat of previous days.

“We were fortunate today with the weather,” said head coach Butch Davis. “We’ve managed to avoid any cancellations and that’s important. We made some good progress today across the board. The morning practice was memorable for some solid defensive play and the afternoon practice was encouraging from an offensive standpoint.”

Davis mentioned the play of cornerbacks Leonard Myers and Mike Rumph as highlights of the morning workout. “Both Leonard and Mike made tremendous interceptions,” Davis said. “Leonard’s was one of the best interceptions I’ve ever seen at any level.”

Sophomore tight end Jeremy Shockey, a transfer from Northeast Oklahoma Junior College who joined the team last week, earned Davis’s praise in the afternoon practice. “Jeremy’s shown some real ability as a pass catcher, but that’s not a surprise to us,” Davis said. “He was a receiver in high school who transformed into a tight end. We’re very encouraged with what he’s done.”

The Hurricanes have a single practice scheduled for Sunday scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. Two-a-day practices resume Monday with practices scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. UM football practices are open to the public through Tuesday, August 15.
