James To Host Academic Enrichment Program
June 15, 2000
Coral Gables, FL – Former University of Miami standout and current Miami Heat forward Tim James (Miami, FL) will host the first annual Athletes Academic Attitude Enrichment seminar beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 17 at the University of Miami.
The program, which is sponsored by James’ recently formed TJ40 Foundation, will be free to 1,300 high school boys and girls participating in the Nike Summer Basketball League.
The participants will receive ACT-SAT preparation from Mike Shapiro, one of the nation’s leading experts in academic testing, as well as a human development and social skills seminar directed by Wali Jones, a 10-year NBA veteran and current Miami Heat Associate Vice President of Community Relations.
James, a two time first-team All-BIG EAST selection and a third team All-American selection as a senior, was a first-round draft choice (25th overall) of the Miami Heat in the 1999 NBA Draft.
James, who grew up in the Liberty City section of Miami, is the only player in UM history to record 1,500 career points, 800 career rebounds and 200 career blocked shots. On February 27, 1999, James joined Rick Barry as the only basketball players in UM history to have their numbers retired.
