UM Football Has Light Workout

CORAL GABLES, FL – The University of Miami football team continued spring practice, with a one hour and 30 minute practice in helmets and no pads, at the Greentree Practice Facility on the UM campus.
Following pre-practice warm-ups, the team broke off into the offense and defense and worked on their formations and plays. After the offensive and defensive workouts, the team separated into their respective position groups to work on fundamental drills. The practice ended with an 11-on-11 drill.
After practice, head coach Butch Davis spoke about the days events.
“The NCAA mandates that you have to have three days in shorts and today was as good a day as any. We have some guys that are flirting with some bumps and Ken Dorsey was a little ill and wasn’t going to be available for practice. So rather than utilize one the real constructive practices with helmets and shoulder pads or full pads and scrimmage, we did a lot of teaching. I think it was a productive day. The players were focused and listening.”
Coach Davis then discussed how he felt the players who switched positions this spring were adjusting.
“At this point I think you would have to say that every single position switch has been a positive. LaVaar Scott moving from linebacker to defensive end has been a positive thing. He has looked more natural with his hand on the ground and he has a little more burst off the edge as a pass rusher. Aaron Moser has shown some good things, he also has a good shot at being special teams captain this year. James Sikora working as the second team tight end is getting four times the snaps that he would get at offensive line. Hopefully, he can be a part of our jumbo package with the bigger offensive lineman and tight ends.”
Davis also gave his thoughts on how he feels Ethenic Sands is developing as the second string quarterback.
“Ethenic threw the ball extremely well. The more repetitions he gets the better he looks.”
The Hurricanes will resume practice on Friday, March 31 at 3:00 p.m. at the Greentree Practice Facility on the Coral Gables Campus.
Spring Practice will conclude with CanesFest and the annual Spring Game at the Orange Bowl on Saturday, April 8. This year’s CanesFest will feature the unveiling of the Hurricanes new uniforms, logos and designs for the 2000 season. Events for CanesFest will include season-ticket select-a-seat, “Ask the Coach” session, Fun Zone interactive area and an autograph session following the game with Hurricane players and coaches.
