Hurricanes Complete First Week of Practice

March 10, 2000

CORAL GABLES, FL — The University of Miami football team continued spring practice this afternoon with a two and a half hour workout in helmets and full pads at the Greentree Practice Facility on the UM campus.

Following pre-practice warm-ups, the team broke off into their respective position groups to work on fundamental drills. After the position workouts, the team went to offensive and defensive drills followed by blocking drills. The practice ended with full-squad eleven-on-eleven drills.

Head Coach Butch Davis spoke about the first day of full-contact and his team’s work ethic.

“The first day of serious competition in pads was excellent. The thing that impresses me the most is the willingness to work and the willingness to challenge each other. If this team continues to work and come out every day with the goal that they are going to be a better football team when they finish, than when they started, we will make great strides.”

Davis also talked about the offense and how it is coming together.

Ken Dorsey is doing some outstanding things and I’m pleased with what Ethenic Sands is doing, as well. The running back situation is very healthy and our offensive line has been as physical and as focused for the past three days as we’ve been in the five years that I’ve been here.”

Later, Davis also spoke about the team’s defense.

Sheven Marshall has made tremendous strides and Chris Campbell has played outstanding. Leonard Myers and Philip Buchanan were just smothering our receivers today, and those are some pretty good receivers.”

The Hurricanes will resume practice on Tuesday, March 21 after having a week off for Spring Break.

Spring Practice will conclude with CanesFest and the annual Spring Game at the Orange Bowl on Saturday, April 8. This year’s CanesFest will feature the unveiling of the Hurricanes new uniforms for the 2000 season. Events for CanesFest will include season-ticket select-a-seat, “Ask the Coach” session, Fun Zone interactive area and an autograph session following the game with Hurricane players and coaches.
