Vonda Matthews Earns All-BIG EAST Honors

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-Freshman Vonda Matthews (Broken Arrow, Ok.) of the University of Miami women’s soccer team was named to the All-BIG EAST second team and the All-BIG EAST Rookie Team for the 2000 season.
Matthews made an immediate impact on the team, starting all 20 games this season. She also proved to be a very versatile player, playing defender for the first half of the season and forward for the second half of the season.
She finished out the season with 10 points, including four goals and two assists.
She was also named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after an incredible weekend, including wins over Rutgers and Georgetown.
She scored UM’s second goal, including the game-winning goal over Georgetown and assisted on the third goal. She netted the fifth goal of the afternoon for the Hurricanes in the 5-1 win over the Hoyas.
She led the team with five points in the win over Georgetown.
The Hurricanes wrapped up the season with a record of 9-10-1 overall and 2-3 in the BIG EAST.
