Miami Hurricanes Football Practice Report

Oct. 12, 2000

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The Miami Hurricanes (No. 4 AP/No. 6 ESPN/USA Today) practiced for two hours Thursday afternoon at Greentree Practice Field on the UM campus. That workout, the second of the week, was conducted under sunny skies in breezy conditions as the team focused on fundamentals and the basics as the team’s final open weekend of the season approached.

“We’re getting accomplished what we need to get done this week, getting a long look at ourselves,” said head coach Butch Davis. “In an long season, if you’re not careful, your fundamental skills diminish. You work very hard in training camp and the early part of the season focusing on tackling and fundamentals. As the season goes along, you work a lot on schemes and, sometimes, your fundamentals diminish. The open date – in addition to getting guys well (physically) – allows us to clean up some things fundamentally.”

In other news, Davis also announced that the team has named permanent captains for the 2000 season. Linebacker Dan Morgan became the first player in UM history to be named team captain three consecutive years and he is joined by fellow captains defensive lineman Damione Lewis, free safety Al Blades, wide receiver Reggie Wayne and offensive lineman Joaquin Gonzalez. The captains were determined by players’ vote.

Miami, which has this Saturday off, resumes the season Saturday, October 21 at Temple in a game at Veterans Stadium in Philadephia that will be televised live by WPLG-TV Channel 10 on the BIG EAST network.

The Hurricanes continue practice Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Greentree. All practices are closed to the public. For ticket information concerning Hurricanes football, contact the UM Ticket Office at (305) 284-2263 or 1-800-GO-CANES. Tickets may also be ordered online at www.hurricanesports.com.
