Miami Wins BIG EAST Home Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla.–Twin sisters, Laura and Ashley West (Allen, Texas) combined to score the game-winning goal for the University of Miami in a 1-0 BIG EAST win over Providence Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium.

Miami improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST, while Providence falls to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST.

The Hurricanes are on a four-match winning streak, which is a school record for the most consecutive wins in a season.

Ashley had the game-winning assist on a corner kick she placed right in front of her twin sister Laura, who headed the ball right into the net at 65:64, to score the game-winning goal.

“I am very pleased with the win,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “Providence played very well and our kids responded in a positive manner. There are some things we will work on and improve on for the next one.”

This is Laura’s second game-winning goal of the season, and Ashley’s second game-winning assist.

Laura leads the team with five goals scored and 12 points on the season.

Despite the heavy rain, the Hurricanes took 20 shots, while the Friars had five.

The Hurricanes will take a break from BIG EAST action to they travel to face cross-town rival Florida International Tuesday at 7 p.m.
