Hurricanes Practice In Full Pads
Aug. 13, 2000
Coral Gables, FL – The University of Miami Hurricanes continued two-a-day preseason football practice with a two-hour workout Sunday afternoon on the Greentree Practice Field. The workout marked the first practice in full pads for the Hurricanes.
“You can see the skilled guys are clearly on track,” said head coach Butch Davis. “Santana (Moss), Reggie (Wayne), Najeh (Davenport), and James (Jackson) are doing outstanding. It’s good to see Najeh running. He took some licks and he passed some licks today. That’s part of that psychological barrier that every player that comes off of surgery has to go through.”
Davis commented on the defense after the first day of full contact.
“The one thing that is very evident is the team defensive spirit. They’ve got a fanatical effort to get the football.”
Sophomore tight end Jeremy Shockey, a transfer from Northeast Oklahoma Junior College who joined the team last week, earned Davis’s praise in practice.
“Jeremy Shockey just continues to get better every day. He’s a very gifted athlete, but his most redeeming quality right now is his ability to catch the football.”
Two-a-day practices resume Monday with practices scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. UM football practices are open to the public through Tuesday, August 15.
