Aug. 11, 2000
Coral Gables, FL – University of Miami Senior Associate Athletic Director Craig Angelos announced Friday that head women’s track coach Amy Deem has signed a new three-year contract with the Hurricanes. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
“I am extremely pleased that we have been able to reach an agreement that will keep Coach Deem here another three years,” said Angelos. “The tremendous success that she and her staff have enjoyed over the past 10 seasons is truly indicative of their abilities.”
Deem took over the Hurricanes’ program in 1990 and brought it from its modest beginnings into national prominence. In 10 seasons Deem has guided 11 athletes to a combined total of 30 All-America honors and six individual national championships. Prior to her arrival, the Hurricanes had never had a student-athlete qualify for the NCAA Championships. In addition, Deem has coached the NCAA Champion in the 100-meter hurdles in four of the last eight seasons.
“I appreciate the continued support that President Foote, Paul Dee and the University administration has given the women’s track and field program,” said Deem. “Having dedicated the last 10 seasons to building the University of Miami program, my staff and I are committed to seeing the job completed. This new contract will allow us to continue what we have started.”
Last season Deem extended her streak of consecutive seasons with at least one All-American to nine. Kareen Clarke (triple jump) and Natalie Watson (800-meters) earned All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, AR, while Wyllesheia Myrick earned All-America honors in the 200-meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Durham, NC.
During her tenure Deem has also developed the Hurricanes into a BIG EAST power. Miami has finished either first or second in four consecutive BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, including back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999.
Deem and her staff have been honored as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year three times in the last five season having taken home the honor in 1996, 1998 and 1999. In 1998, Deem was recognized as the USA Track & Field Florida Coach of the Year.
