Q&A with Freshman Linebacker Darrell McClover

Darrell comes to Coral Gables from nearby Coconut Creek in Broward County. He was a standout member of the Coconut Creek varsity football team. As a senior, he recorded 95 tackles and 16 sacks. As a junior, he led his team to the district title after recording 108 tackles and three blocked punts. He was rated among the top linebackers in Florida by SuperPrep and was a second-team All-State selection by the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel. McClover selected Miami over Syracuse, Boston College, Florida and Kansas.

Your house is on fire. Your family is safe. What items do you go back in and get?
I would probably like to save my nice clothes and shoes. But, the most important thing I would want to make sure to save is myself while I am running in and out for these items.

Who in your family do you idolize?
I idolize my father, Darrell. People say that I look like him and we have the same name. He is a very good father, so I might as well act like him too.

Some people would be surprised to learn this about you?
People would be surprised that I sing a lot.

Last time you were amazed about one of your accomplishments?
In a game against Coral Springs (High School), I wrestled the quarterback to the ground. I accelerated and caught the quarterback from behind. I grabbed him by his shirt and swung him around three times in the air.

Who do you think is the best player ever at your position?
Jessie Armstead. He is able to dominate from sideline to sideline.

One athlete or entertainer you look at and say, “I wish I had his or her life”?
Michael Jordan. Everyone likes to be like Mike. So would I!

You are stuck on an island forever. Pick one CD, one book and one woman who is not your girlfriend?
The CD I would like to take is Jagged Edge. The book would be the Bible. I am sorry, I would have to take my girlfriend, Xori.

What do you think was the greatest sports moment of the past century?
The greatest sports moment for me was when the Tennessee Titans on that lateral play beat the Buffalo Bills. I could see Kevin Dyson getting cornered and it was like slow-motion when he threw the ball sideways to Frank Wycheck. At first, I couldn’t believe it. After the replay, I still couldn’t believe it. What a dramatic ending to such an important game.

What is your movie?
My favorite movie is “Rudy.”

What player did you pretend to be while growing up?
Deion Sanders.
