SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Johnny Hemsley scored 18 points and Miami kept NotreDame’s Troy Murphy from reaching the 1,000-point plateau as the Hurricanes beatthe Irish 63-49 Tuesday night.
Murphy, who leads the Big East with a 24.4 average, was held to 14 points,giving him 996 for his career. Miami (12-7, 5-2 Big East) harassed the6-foot-10 sophomore into 4-of-13 shooting.
Notre Dame (12-8, 3-3) trailed 38-25 with just under 16 minutes left beforea Murphy dunk cut the lead to 38-31. But Murphy was hit with a technical foulfor hanging on the rim, and Hemsley converted both free throws to spark an 8-0run that pushed the lead to 46-31 with 10:33 left.
Notre Dame never threatened again, and Miami led by as many as 21.
The Hurricanes bottled up the inside, forcing Notre Dame to go to itsoutside shooting game, which never caught fire. Three days after setting aschool record with 14 3-pointers in an 81-66 win over Pittsburgh, the Irishwere just 5-of-22 from behind the 3-point arc and shot 32 percent (16-of-50)for the game.
John Salmons scored 10 points for the Hurricanes, who shot 21-of-45 from thefield and 17-of-18 from the foul line.
Miami led 31-22 at halftime after holding the Irish to 8-of-23 shooting. TheHurricanes shot 50 percent (13-of-26) in the first half as both teams committednine turnovers.
Jimmy Dillon scored 10 points for the Irish.
Before the game, Notre Dame had a moment of silence for men’s soccer coachMike Berticelli, who died Tuesday, apparently from a heart attack.
