Canes Sign Junior College All-American

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Headwomen’s basketball coach Ferne Labatiannounces the signing of 5-11 junior college All-American guard DaliaClarke(Antigua, West Indies) to a national letter of intent to attend theUniversity of Miami next fall. Clarke chose the Hurricanes overSouthwestMissouri State and Houston.
“Dalia is one of top swingguards in the country,” said Labati.”She will have the opportunity to step in and contribute immediately.Daliahas great vision is a tenacious rebounder.”
Clarke, a NJCAA All-Americanat Marshalltown Community College inIowa, was rated as the No. 2 guard at the junior college level andNo. 7prospect overall by the All-Star Girls Report. Clarke playedall threeperimeter positions for the Tigers last season and averaged 17 points,14.5rebounds, 6.0 assists, 5.5 steals and 3.3 blocks per game. Additionally,Clarke recorded 19 double-doubles, six triple-doubles and onequadruple-double. She was named the Iowa Community College ConferencePlayer of the Week five times in 1997-98, while breaking the regionalrecordfor rebounds and steals.
“Dalia’s style of play isvery athletic,” added MarshalltownCommunity College Head Coach Terri Craft. “She is considereda slasher inthat she goes to the basket well. Her ability to anticipate passeshas madeher mark in the steal column and the blocked shot area.”
Clarke joins 6-1 forwardChanivia Broussard (Miami Northwestern),5-10 guard Meghan Saake (Wellington/Wellington, FL), 5-10 guard AmandaPapuga (Lyons Township/Oak Brook, IL) and 6-2 forward Alicia Hartlaub(Elco/Schaefferstown, PA) as Hurricane commitments for next fall.
