Hurricanes Fall To Illinois State

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – Tarise Bryson tied the school record with eight3-pointers and finished with 40 points, eight assists and six rebounds asIllinois State beat Miami 87-78 Wednesday in the fifth-place game of the SanJuan Shootout.
Bryson, who was 8-for-11 from 3-point range, made three free throws over thefinal 20 seconds for the Redbirds (4-6) after Miami had pulled within 81-78 ona 3-pointer by Mario Bland.
Miami (5-5) played without leading scorer Johnny Hemsley as he served thefirst game of a two-game suspension after he exchanged words with coach LeonardHamilton early in the second half of Tuesday’s victory over Detroit-Mercy.Hemsley kicked a chair as he left the bench, went to the locker room and didn’treturn.
“I think I got frustrated and I reacted before thinking. But I talked thismorning with the coaching staff and we settled a couple of things,” said the6-foot-6 senior, who is averaging 17.7 points a game. “I just have do my timeand take it like a man. You just have to learn from this experience.”
Hemsley attributed his outburst to the pressure he has put on himself tohelp Miami be a good team.
“I’ve been wanting so bad to have a good season that I’ve put a lot ofpressure on myself. I just want to win for the team and for myself,” he saidafter watching Wednesday’s game from the bench in street clothes. “I can’twait to get back on the court and help my team.”
Ryan Crowley added 16 points for Illinois State, while P.J. Smith and L. DeeMurdock each had 12.
Bland led the Hurricanes with 18 points, while John Salmons had 16 and EltonTyler and Leroy Hurd added 10 each.
