Miami Loses A Close One At Memphis, 82-72

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Guard Keiron Shine scored 39 points, including 23 inthe second half, to lead the Memphis Tigers to an 82-72 victory over Miami onSaturday.

Shine connected on 12-of-16 from the field, including six-of-seven3-pointers. He added 9-of-10 free throws as the Tigers (4-2) put together a14-2 run with just under five minutes to play to pull away.

Marcus Moody and Kelly Wise added 13 points each for Memphis.

Miami (3-1) was led by Mario Bland with 22 and Johnny Hemsley with 20. EltonTyler finished with 11.

Memphis led 30-28, but the Hurricanes scored the first eight points of thesecond half, as Bland and Hemsley collected a pair of baskets each.

That gave Miami a 36-30 lead, and the Hurricanes would eventually build theadvantage to eight with 12:18 left, when Hemsley scored inside.

Miami maintained a four-to-six point lead through much of the middle portionof the second half. Each time, Memphis would whittle into the advantage, manytimes behind the shooting of Shine.

Miami held a 63-62 lead with 5:04 remaining when Tyler grabbed a reboundbasket.

Then the Tigers started their stretch run, including nine consecutivepoints. The major play in the sequence came when Miami’s Paulo Coelho wascalled for an intentional foul, as Shine drove to the basket.

Shine hit both free throws and on the ensuing possession nailed a 3-pointerfrom the top of the key for a 71-63 lead.

Memphis would eventually build a lead to 12 when Shine hit a pair of freethrows with 12:05 seconds left for an 81-69 lead.

In the final minute, Memphis hit eight of ten free throws to preserve itslead. One of those misses was by Shine with just over seven seconds to play,and was the only shot he missed in the second half.
