Franks Named First Team All-American

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami tight end Daniel Franks (Bubba) was named a first-team All-American on Wednesday by Football News.Hurricane offensive guard Richard Mercier and linebacker Nate Webster wereeach named second-team All-American by the publication.
Franks, a junior from Big Spring, TX, has recorded 35 receptions for434 yards and four touchdowns in 1999. A powerful 6-6, 260-pounder who hasstarted in 28 of 32 career games, Franks has 67 career receptions for 907yards and 11 touchdowns. His 11 career touchdowns rank first all-time amongUniversity of Miami tight ends. This season, Franks has recorded five ormore catches in four games, including a season-high six catches for 78 yardsat Boston College on October 23.
Mercier, a senior from Montreal, Canada, is regarded as one of thetop pulling guards in the nation. An excellent run blocker, Mercier hashelped paved the way for the Miami offense to average 171 rushing yards pergame. A proficient pass protector as well, Mercier was a big part in notallowing a quarterback sack in last week’s game vs. Rutgers. The veteranhas started in 45 games and is on pace to tie the school record for careergames started.
Webster, a junior from Miami, Florida, leads the Hurricanes with 121tackles (73 solo) in 1999. A three-time recipient of BIG EAST DefensivePlayer of the Week honors, Webster is also one of 15 finalists for theFootball News Defensive Player of the Year Award. This year, Webster hasregistered seven double-digit tackle performances, including a season-high20 tackles vs. then-No. 2 Penn State on September 18.
Miami (6-4, 4-1 BIG EAST) hosts Syracuse (6-4, 3-3 BIG EAST) onSaturday at 3:30 p.m. in the Orange Bowl.
