Moss, Webster Earn BIG EAST Honors
Nov. 22, 1999
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Quarterbacks TIM HASSELBECK of Boston College and MICHAEL VICK of Virginia Tech have been named Co-Offensive Players of the Week, the league announced. Miami linebacker NATE WEBSTER earned defensive honors, with the Hurricanes’ SANTANA MOSS capturing Special Teams Player of the Week.
Hasselbeck (Norfolk, Mass.) was involved in 28 of the Eagles’ 31 points in Boston College’s 31-29 win at Notre Dame. The junior quarterback completed 20-of-30 passes for a career-high 272 yards with three touchdowns. He also posted a team-high 60 rushing yards, including a one-yard scoring run. Hasselbeck is the second member of his family to win BIG EAST weekly honors. Tim’s brother, Matt, earned offensive accolades on Sept. 22, 1997.
They are the first brothers in conference history to win Player of the Week.
Vick (Newport News, Va.) piled up 305 yards of total offense to lead the Hokies to a 62-7 win at Temple. The redshirt freshman quarterback opened the Tech scoring with a 53-yard touchdown run. He also had a 75-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, finishing with a game-high 134 rushing yards, an 11.2-yard average. Vick also threw for 171 yards and two touchdowns on 7-of-10 passing. The weekly award is his fourth of the season, tying a BIG EAST single-season record held by three players. Vick is the first freshman to garner the honor four times in one season.
Webster (Miami, Fla.) led a Miami defense that held Rutgers to 64 total yards in the Hurricanes’ 55-0 win. The junior linebacker finished with seven tackles, including five solo. He also added 2.5 sacks, as Miami finished with 10 in the game. The team sack total was one short of the UM single-game record. Webster leads the ‘Canes with 121 tackles (72 solo) this season.
Moss (Miami, Fla.) recorded 155 yards of returns in Miami’s win over Rutgers. The junior had four punt returns for 127 yards, with one kickoff return for 28 yards. Included in the punt yardage total was a 67-yard return for a touchdown in second quarter. It marked the first punt return for a touchdown by a Hurricane since Duane Starks had an 85-yard return at Baylor on Aug. 30, 1997. The return against RU was the longest of Moss’ career.
