Women's Soccer Heads To No. 6 Notre Dame

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team(12-7) travel to No. 6 Notre Dame (15-3) to face the Irish in a BIG EASTChampionship quarterfinal match on Tuesday at Alumni Field on the ND campus.

The Hurricanes qualified for the eight-team post season format afterrecording a 2-3 record and fourth place in the BIG EAST Northeast Division.Miami, playing its first season as a member of the BIG EAST, defeatedProvidence (2-0) on the road on Sept. 24 and St. John’s (1-0) at CobbStadium on Oct. 8.

The Hurricanes are led in scoring by freshman Allison McWhinney, whohas 26 points off a team-high 10 goals and six assists. The Miami offensegoes even further as a total of six players have recorded double-figurepoint totals: Nina Wathne (19 points, 7 goals, 5 assists), Deidre Bass (18pts., 7 gls., 4 ast.), Lisa Gomez (18 pts., 4 gls., 10 ast.), AlexisMacKenzie (12 pts., 4 gls., 4 ast.), Jennifer Sanchez (11 pts., 5 gls., 1ast.).

Most recently, the Hurricanes defeated Boise State, 7-0, on Oct. 31at Cobb Stadium. The win, UM’s largest shut out in its two seasons of play,brought the team’s overall record to 12 wins. The win total surpasses lastseason’s inaugural season record of 11-7-1. In addition, of UM’s 12 wins in1999 a BIG EAST leading 10 have come by shut out.

No. 6 Notre Dame, who should move up in the rankings released lateMonday, most recently defeated Wisconsin (9-2) and Indiana (4-1) to closeout its regular season. ND defeated Miami, 7-1, in both teams’ first-evermeeting on Oct. 24. The Irish were NCAA National Champions in 1995 andfinished the 1999 season atop the BIG EAST Mid-Atlantic Division with a 6-0league record.

The Final Four will be played at Rutgers University, Nov. 5-7.Other quarterfinal match-ups are: #1 Connecticut (Northeast) vs. #4Georgetown (Mid-Atlantic), #2 Syracuse (NE) vs. #3 Seton Hall (MA), #3Boston College (NE) vs. #2 Villanova (MA). Quarterfinal matches will takesplace at the higher seeds home site.
