Men's Basketball Chosen Fourth In BIG EAST Preseason Poll

NEW YORK – University of Miami senior guard Johnny Hemsley was named tothe preseason All-BIG EAST first team by a vote of the league’s coaches atthe BIG EAST Conference Men’s Basketball Media Day at the Grand Hyatt in NewYork.

Hemsley, a preseason Naismith Award candidate and 1998-99 first team All-BIGEAST selection, averaged 17.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per gamelast season in helping lead the Miami to a 23-7 record, its secondconsecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and a No. 10 national ranking in thefinal Associated Press College Basketball Poll.

The men’s basketball team was selected to finish fourth in the conferencebehind Connecticut, Syracuse, and St. John’s. Miami, which returns fourstarters from last season’s squad, received one first place vote.

Miami opens the regular season on the road against Central Floridaon Friday, Nov. 19, before returning to Miami for their home opener againstMonmouth on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Miami Arena.
