WOW!! What a comeback in Chestnut Hill. I tell you what, it does notget anymore exciting than that. We had our fans, coaches and ourselveson a triple loop rollercoaster ride. Trust that is not how we plannedit, fortunately it worked out for the better in the end.
I mentioned that earlier in the week that Boston College always playsus tough in their own backyard and Saturday was a prime example. In ablurr it was 28-0, we didn’t know what hit us. We could contribute theslow start to the many bye weeks that we have had, because if a team isnot playing consistently week in and week out they lose some of thecontinuity of game speed situation. However you have to tip your hattoBC, they came out storming and took advantage of that and took theearlylead.
It’s amazing. At halftime we were a little shell shocked, but we stillknew if we made the proper adjustment that we would be fine. It was amatterof just not beating ourselves. We shot ourselves in the foot numeroustimes with penalties and by just not executing offensively. Ipersonallycontributed to the sputter, with a failure to catch a deep pass thatwould have put our offense in great field position in the first half.Give BC credit, but we did a lot to hold ourselves back as well.
In theend it was the highly criticized kicker Andy Crosland who put the finalcherry on the cake to win the game. However, let us not forget thegreat plays from Kenny Kelly, Reggie Wayne, William Joseph, SantanaMoss, James Jackson and the Entire Offensive Line as major contributingfactors as well.
After all that we are 1-0 in the Big East and off and running. Wefinally get to come home and play in front of the home fans. This weekwe face off with another conference opponent, the West VirginiaMountaineers — another good football team that has played us tough inthe past.
Many of you ‘Canes fans can remember two years ago that theyhad a come-from-behind victory against us in the Orange Bowl. So thisteam has always given us a battle. One of the reasons could be thattheyhave a lot of South Miami players on their team, so they feel that theyhave something to prove in front of their family’s. This and all theother reasons, such as Big East supremacy, makes for this to be a hardhittingcontest.
Hopefully, now we are back into a routine, no more Hurricane-forcedwinds that will cancel games so we can get on a roll and have a snow-ball effect in these games.
Now that we are finally under way in the Big East schedule, we mustcompete even harder each and every week to give ourselves a chance whenit is all said and done. To all the ‘Canes fans who read my columneachweek here locally, come on out and support us this week against theMountaineers. We’re going to need your support.
From a ‘Cane to all the ‘Canes fans.
