Oct. 8, 1999

Coral Gables, FL – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (8-4, 2-2 BIG EAST) knocked off St. John’s (6-4-1, 0-3 BIG EAST), 1-0, in a BIG EAST Northeast Division match at Cobb Stadium.

The Hurricanes lone score came from sophomore defender Deidre Bass (Coral Springs/Stoneman-Douglas) in the 23rd minute of play off an assist from freshman forward Allison McWhinney. McWhinney stole the ball from the Red Storm defense and passed the ball to Bass on 2-on-1 break away. Bass scored from 10 yards out, beating St. John’s goalkeeper Kristina Fogg down the center of the net.

Bass’ score, her fifth on the season, ties her for the team lead in game-winning goals (2), while McWhinney’s fifth assist on the season was also her team-best second game-winner. St. John’s Fogg totaled eight saves in goal, while UM’s sophomore keeper Elizabeth Swinson (Boca Raton/Boca Raton HS) had four saves while recording her third shutout on the year.

Miami held the offensive advantage over St. John’s with an 18-9 margin in shots on goal and a 6-1 margin in corner kicks. In the 80th minute, Red Storm defender Anne Johnston picked up a red card for fighting and was ejected.

The win marked UM’s first over a BIG EAST opponent at Cobb Stadium and pushed their conference mark to 2-2 on the year.

Miami returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. against No. 19 Connecticut at Cobb Stadium.
