Soccer Team Picked to Finish Fourth in Big East Northeast Division

Coral Gables, FL – The University of Miami women’s soccer team was selected to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Northeast Division, as voted on by the conference coaches.
The Hurricanes will begin play in the BIG EAST in 1999 after spending the inaugural 1998 season as an independent. Miami, which finished with an 11-7-1 overall record last year, was picked behind Connecticut, Syracuse and Boston College. UM was selected ahead of St. John’s and Providence.
Notre Dame was selected to win the BIG EAST’s Mid-Atlantic Division, ahead of Seton Hall. Connecticut, Syracuse and Notre Dame each qualified for last year’s NCAA Tournament, while the both the Huskies and Fighting Irish advanced to the quarterfinals.
Miami begins the 1999 season on the road against intra-state rival Florida State on August 29. The Hurricanes open their home schedule on August 31 with a 7 p.m. game against Long Island University at the Cobb Stadium for Soccer, Track and Field on the UM campus. The 1999 home opener marks the inaugural game to be played at the school’s newest athletic facility following its completion last spring.
