LAS VEGAS, NEV. – The University of Miami men’s basketball team will take on Akron on Thursday to close competition at the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic at South Point Arena. Both teams have won their opening two games in Las Vegas, with the Hurricanes defeating Oral Roberts and Rice, and the Zips downing Arkansas-Little Rock and Stetson.

Miami – who has won seven of its last eight games – won its second-straight contest at the Las Vegas Classic with the 73-67 victory over Rice on Wednesday. Malcolm Grant led the `Canes with 25 points – including 6-of-8 three-point shooting, while Durand Scott added 10 points and Garrius Adams and Adrian Thomas added nine points apiece.

Grant, who is averaging 19.2 points per game over the last five games – converting 95 percent from the line, 58.3 percent from long range and 51.2 percent from the field, leads Miami on the season with 15.3 points per game, while Scott adds 13.5 points and Reggie Johnson contributes 11.3 points and 9.3 rebounds an outing.

Akron rides a three-game win streak in Thursday’s showdown and also has three players averaging double-figure points. Nikola Cvetinovic leads the Zips with 12.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, while Brett McClanahan adds 11.7 points and 7-foot center Zeke Marshall adds 10.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 blocks an outing.

Four Zips finished in double figures in their 72-56 win over Stetson, led by a season-high 16 points – including four three-pointers – from Steve McNees and 13 points from McClanahan. Leading-scorer Cvetinovic was limited to two points in 12 minutes. Akron hit 14 three-pointers at a 48.3 percent clip and knocked down 16-of-17 free throws.
