Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The consensus No. 2-ranked Miami Hurricanes continued preparation for the 2001 season with a two-hour full squad practice Sunday afternoon at the Greentree Practice Fields on the UM campus.

Head Coach Larry Coker praised the emergence of some of the young offensive players, including running back Willis McGahee and quarterback Derrick Crudup. Coker also went on to compliment the continued development of the receiving corps and the progress of the team just three practices into the preseason.

“I don’t see how anyone ever tackled him (McGahee),” commented Coker. “He’s strong, fast, quick and smart. He is certainly a good prospect. (Derrick) Crudup also continues to improve. The receivers are still coming up with big plays. Ethenic (Sands) had some big catches on our defense. Our offensive line has also helped the defensive line get much better. Sherko (Haji-Rasouli) is still playing at No. 1 left guard and is doing a very nice job. Nevertheless, we have some talented depth on the offensive line with Vernon Carey and Ed Wilkins. We’re going to look for our best people and put them their.”

Junior defensive line Jamaal Green was held out of contact with a sprained left knee and did mostly conditioning during the session. Coach Coker anticipates his return to the line-up for Monday’s afternoon practice.

The Hurricanes will have two practices on Monday beginning at 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The team’s first scrimmage of the fall will take place during the afternoon practice on Wednesday, August 15, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Greentree. Practices are open to the public through August 15. All workouts are closed to the public beginning Thursday, August 16, with regular media policies going into effect at that time.

The Hurricanes begin the 2001 season Saturday, September 1, at Penn State in a nationally televised contest (ABC Sports). Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
