Vikki Alonzo Named ACC Player of the Week
Sept. 9, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference has announced that the University of Miami’s Vikki Alonzo has been named the ACC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week.
The freshman goalkeeper recorded her third and fourth shutouts of the season as the unbeaten Hurricanes went on the road to blank Arkansas-Little Rock and defending Conference USA champion Memphis by identical 3-0 scores.
Alonzo and Miami prevailed against Memphis despite being out-shot 16-7, and the Carrollton, Texas, native stepped up to record six saves while playing the full 90 minutes.
This is the first ACC Player of the Week Award for the Hurricanes this season. Brittney Steinbruch (Oct. 1) and Lauren McAdam (Oct. 15) became the first Miami players to earn the distinction for their performances last season.
The 26th-ranked Hurricanes will look to open the season with a school record-breaking sixth straight win when they take on Purdue at Cobb Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 10th when they host Boilermakers at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale at $3 for children and $5 for adults.
