CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – Thurman Zimmerman scored 17 points to lead South Carolina State to a 60-50 upset win over Miami on Tuesday night, the first loss for first-year Hurricanes coach Frank Haith.

Robert Hite pulled the Hurricanes (1-1), who trailed most of the game, to within 54-50 when he drained an off-balance 3-pointer with 2:29 left to play. Zimmerman responded by bulling his way in for a basket and a 56-50 Bulldogs lead with 1:01 remaining.

South Carolina State (4-1) hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

William Frisby had 18 points and Hite 17 for the Hurricanes, who were outrebounded 34-32 by the Bulldogs. Miami shot just 34.7 percent and had more turnovers (16) than assists (14) for the second time this season.

In the second half, South Carolina State took a 12-point lead on a Zimmerman basket with 14:17 left, but the Hurricanes mounted a 14-2 run to pull within 48-45 capped by Frisby’s three-pointer with 8:20 remaining. Frisby scored 9 points during the run.
