Oct. 28, 2002

Providence, R.I. (BIG EAST) – Miami’s Ken Dorsey has been named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced. Pittsburgh’s Claude Harriott and Syracuse’s Rich Scanlon earned defensive honors, while the Panthers’ David Abdul and Nate Jones of Rutgers shared Special Teams Player of the Week.

Dorsey (Orinda, Calif.) threw for a career-high 422 yards in the Hurricanes’ 40-23 win at West Virginia. The senior quarterback completed 22-of-36 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The passing yardage was the eighth-best single-game performance in Miami history. He also set a Mountaineer Field record for passing yards. Dorsey is 42-of-81 for 784 yards and four touchdowns in his last two games.

Harriott (Belle Glade, Fla.) was a defensive leader for the Panthers in their 19-16 overtime victory over Syracuse. The junior defensive end had seven tackles (four solo), including three tackles for loss and a forced fumble. He also registered an important two-yard sack of BC quarterback Brian St. Pierre in the extra period, just before the Eagles’ unsuccessful field goal attempt.

Scanlon (Oradell, N.J.) led the Syracuse defense in a 45-14 win over Rutgers. The junior linebacker finished with six tackles, including four solo and three tackles for loss. He had three sacks for 27 yards in losses as SU posted eight QB sacks in the game. Scanlon also recorded one forced fumble and one fumble recovery as the Orangemen held RU to 193 total yards.

Abdul (Hartville, Ohio) accounted for 13 of his team’s points in the Panthers’ victory. The true freshman placekicker matched BIG EAST and school records with four field goals, including the game-winning 42-yard kick in overtime. He also had a 30-yard conversion with five seconds left to send the game into extra sessions. This is the second time this season that Abdul has won weekly honors.

Jones’ (Scotch Plains, N.J.) special teams play helped directly contribute to both Scarlet Knight touchdowns at Syracuse. The junior had his second 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown this season, becoming only the second player in league history (Nate Terry, WVU, 1997) to accomplish the feat. He also blocked a field goal in the first quarter that was returned 90 yards for a touchdown. Jones leads the BIG EAST in kickoff returns and is fourth nationally with a 29.6-yard average.
