Rowing Set to Begin Season at Head of the Hooch Regatta
Nov. 6, 2009
Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing team will be competing in their first official regatta of the fall season this weekend, traveling to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the annual Head of the Hooch Regatta–one of the largest fall regattas in the country. The event takes place Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7-8 on the Tennessee River.
The Head of the Hooch is a 5,000 meter (3.1 miles) head race on the Tennessee River ending at Ross’s Landing Park. All boats are started sequentially and will race against the clock.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Andrew Carter, the Hurricanes will compete in their first race under the former Clemson assistant coach. The `Canes turned in great times during their only scrimmage of the fall back on Oct. 3 as part of the Miami Beach Duals in Miami Beach, Fla.
Carter and his staff are excited about this weekend’s regatta, and expect good competition from a variety of well-respected rowing programs from around the nation in what is widely considered one of the nation’s premier fall regattas.
“The squad is clearly excited to get into fall racing,” expressed Carter. “They have put in solid training over the past two months, and the Head of the Hooch Regatta will be an excellent test. With the Head of the Hooch being one of the largest regattas in the country, there will be terrific competition in Chattanooga this weekend.”
Miami has never traveled to the Head of the Hooch, but is experienced with racing in Tennessee. Last year’s Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships were held in Tennessee, as well as the South/Central Regional Championships. Both events took place in Oak Ridge.

“I think this a very different team than it was when the year began,” remarked Carter. “They’ve jumped into the work with both feet and have done some good things in practice. We’re really just looking forward to the opportunity to race against some top-notch programs, and getting a good measure of our work to date.”
