CORAL GABLES – Kate Howarth, a freshman forward for the University of Miami women’s soccer team has been named to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week for her performance against Ball State on Friday, Aug. 28.
Howarth, a starter for the first two games of the season, came off the bench and scored three goals in just her third collegiate game.
In the 37th minute, Howarth scored her first of goal, as she played a long cross at midfield to a streaking Danielle Bidegain. After a great play to prevent the ball from crossing the sideline, Bidegain served up a perfect ball back to Howarth, who headed it in over the head of the charging keeper.
Only four minutes later, Howarth picked up her second goal after consecutive one touch passes from Katie Oddo and Emilie Huser deep in the Ball State end. Howarth was rewarded by the great passes and put the ball into the empty net as Miami headed into the break with a 2-0 lead.
“After the second goal, I really wanted to get another one,” said Howarth. “I kind of broke the seal and hopefully I can play like this for the rest of the season.”
The Grand Blanc, Mich. native’s third goal came on Bidegain’s cross in the 66th minute. Howarth capitalized on the pass with a sliding one-timer over the keeper, to make it a 4-1 game. The Hurricanes went on to the win the contest 5-1 and improved to 2-1-0 on the season.
Howarth is the first player to be named to the weekly national team since Brittney Steinbruch accomplished the feat in the first week of the 2008 season.
